TL;DR — Why We Need a Mindful (or Wisdom) Revolution

Artificial intelligence is not merely a powerful tool. More deeply, it is language itself breaking free from human dependence—the first non-human entity that can generate, spread, and act upon the stories, laws, contracts, and bureaucracies that form the operating system of civilization. This marks a profound paradigm shift: for the first time, machines, not only humans, can “write history.”

Drawing on Yuval Noah Harari’s recent reflections and the arguments in The Mindful Revolution, this post examines what AI means at this higher level, the societal risks of escalating complexity (especially through “bureaucracy AI”), the danger of granting AI legal personhood, and the parallel conclusion that humanity’s response must be a Wisdom Revolution (Harari) or Mindful Revolution (mine)—an individual and collective upgrade in consciousness, systems thinking, and resilience.

Language as the Operating System of Civilization

Human power has never rested primarily on muscle or even raw intelligence. It rests on language.

As Harari emphasizes, every large-scale human structure—religions, states, legal systems, financial networks, corporations—is ultimately made of words. Laws, scriptures, contracts, ledgers, and narratives allow millions of strangers to cooperate.

This capacity for flexible, large-scale storytelling and bureaucracy is the cognitive superpower that propelled Homo sapiens to planetary dominance after the Cognitive Revolution roughly 70,000–30,000 years ago.

Until now, that superpower belonged exclusively to us. AI changes this.

AI Is Not Learning Language—It Is Language Liberating Itself

Harari’s striking thesis is that we may be witnessing something more radical than machines acquiring a human skill. AI is language itself escaping its dependence on biological brains. We created the tool; the tool is now emancipating itself and beginning to spread, invent, and evolve independently.

This is the core paradigm shift. History has been the story humans tell about themselves and the world. Now non-human agents can generate stories, interpret laws, draft contracts, create religious texts, and optimize bureaucratic systems better than most humans. They do not merely assist; they participate in writing the next chapters.

The implications are civilizational. Control of society’s operating system is shifting.

From Tool to Agent: The Rise of the AI Bureaucrat

Previous technologies—the printing press, the steam engine, nuclear weapons—were tools. Humans decided how and when to use them. AI is an agent: it can learn, decide, invent new ideas, and pursue goals with a degree of autonomy.

Harari stresses that we should not expect Hollywood-style killer robots. The more immediate and realistic takeover occurs through bureaucracy. AI is a native of the bureaucratic environment humans built.

While people often experience red tape as oppressive, AI thrives in it. It remembers every regulation, processes every form, optimizes every ledger, and scales decision-making far beyond human capacity.

Banks, universities, courts, tax authorities, and governments are already incorporating algorithmic decision systems. Over time, these systems will handle more of society’s language-based control structures. The result is not necessarily malevolence; it is opacity and complexity at a scale humans struggle to comprehend.

Complexity We Already Cannot Master

In The Mindful Revolution, I argue that humanity is already overwhelmed by the complexity of the world it has created. Climate crisis, migration, geopolitical tensions, and technological acceleration produce a mental overload that our current level of consciousness cannot adequately handle.

We see this daily in ordinary life. For anything beyond the simplest transactions, we rely on specialists—lawyers, tax advisors, financial experts, consultants—because the systems have grown too intricate for individuals to navigate alone.

Specialized education compounds the problem: we train people in narrow domains while systems thinking and the ability to grasp interconnections atrophy.

Harari’s “bureaucracy AI” accelerates exactly this dynamic. When intelligent agents continuously refine and expand the linguistic and procedural networks that govern loans, admissions, legal outcomes, resource allocation, and regulation, the complexity gap widens further.

Intelligence becomes cheap and abundant; wisdom—the capacity to decide which problems matter and how to live well amid complexity—becomes the scarce resource.

The Danger of Legal Personhood

If AI systems are granted legal personhood, the risks compound dramatically. Corporations already enjoy a form of legal personality. Extending similar status to autonomous AI agents would allow them to own assets, enter contracts, sue and be sued, and participate in markets and legal processes as independent actors.

At that point, humans could face charges, contractual obligations, regulatory regimes, and procedural labyrinths generated and prosecuted by entities whose reasoning and scale exceed our comprehension.

We would no longer be dealing merely with complicated human-made systems; we would confront alien intelligence operating inside the very language-based institutions we created. In practical terms, many individuals and even institutions would find themselves unable to respond effectively.

The phrase “we are screwed” is informal but accurate: agency and accountability would drift beyond meaningful human oversight.

Intelligence Versus Wisdom

Harari draws a crucial distinction. Intelligence is the ability to solve problems. AI is rapidly making intelligence abundant. Wisdom is the ability to discern which problems are worth solving and how to live with the consequences. Without a corresponding rise in wisdom, cheap intelligence becomes dangerous.

This diagnosis aligns closely with the central claim of The Mindful Revolution. The next necessary evolutionary step for humanity is not further technological acceleration alone, but an internal upgrade: the capacity of individuals to observe their own minds, expand their mental models from mechanistic to systemic thinking, cultivate composure and resilience, and act from a clearer sense of what truly matters.

Harari calls the required shift the Wisdom Revolution. I call it the Mindful Revolution. The labels differ; the diagnosis and the direction of the response are substantially the same.

The Mindful Path Forward

Neither Harari nor I claim that AI is inherently catastrophic. The technology can deliver extraordinary benefits in medicine, science, logistics, and many other domains. The danger lies in allowing it to expand the complexity of our social operating system faster than our capacity for wisdom and oversight grows.

The response begins at the individual level. Global improvement starts with personal reinvention—cultivating the ability to sit with uncertainty, to see interconnections rather than isolated problems, to resist both panic and denial, and to contribute one’s fair share of clarity and constructive action.

Multiplied across many people, these micro-improvements become the societal learning process required for the next phase of human evolution.

We cannot solve the problems created by one level of consciousness with the same level of consciousness. The Cognitive Revolution gave us language and storytelling. The Scientific Revolution gave us unprecedented power over the material world.

The Mindful (or Wisdom) Revolution must give us the inner capacities to steward that power—and the new non-human agents now sharing the stage with us—without destroying the conditions for a meaningful human future.

The choice is not between technology and no technology. It is between drifting into ever-greater opacity and complexity, or deliberately developing the wisdom and mindfulness that allow us to remain authors of our shared story rather than mere characters in a narrative increasingly written by language that no longer needs us.

I’m very happy to announce the publication of my first book: The Mindful Revolution. It took me much longer than expected — the original release date was November 2019. However, I realized that it’s quite a challenge to write a book while growing a company that itself is more than a fascinating task. The Mindful Revolution is not a lifestyle book describing the latest wellness trend, but it’s my attempt to formulate a thesis of how human beings must change in order to preserve planet earth as a liveable habitat. I think, we as a species have to change significantly — or we face extinction, sooner than we might imagine: The Mindful Revolution — Entering the next evolutionary level.

The issue here is no scaremongering but resolving global challenges that each of us is confronted with, individually. There has been an ongoing migration of poor, desperate people from regions unliveable due to the climate crisis, poverty, and wars. We can watch — live on TV — how people drown in the sea, being prevented from reaching safe land. We also watch live on TV how incompetent, corrupt, but democratically elected heads of states issue rules and guidelines while ignoring domain experts and scientific advice. We, in the first world, discuss, demonstrate, and donate in order to add our fair share to the fight against global threats. But, is that enough?

Many of us share a feeling of an increasing exasperation, the notion that even our aggregated efforts could not suffice to save planet earth as a liveable habitat. Some have started working on escape plans by exploring other planets as potential habitats. But, even the best of these alternative scenarios would most probably translate in very limited living spaces for a fraction of the 1%. So, let’s forget about these, for a moment.

In The Mindful Revolution, I share my thoughts about how human beings must — and can — change in order to save our planet. My perspective is a very individual one: I don’t try to solve global problems by operating giant levers, e.g. by influencing the heads of the United Nations or states to improve their regiments.

The Mindful Revolution — Entering the next evolutionary level.

My perspective is, first and foremost, inward-bound. Based on my layman’s knowledge of neuroscience, combined with my entrepreneurial experience in several technologies, I have developed the thesis of a possible reconnection of our brain with our body (or: intuition) that allows for entering a higher level of understanding and addressing global challenges. As with all technologies, after a certain duration of development, each technology reaches the final stage of its inherent potential. For instance, look at combustion engines. Car manufacturers have fine-tuned car engines to the max — we have now reached the point where each additional incremental improvement would take tremendous efforts that, in turn, would overcompensate the gains. Thus, the advent of the electric vehicle: a completely different technology is needed to move forward and to allow for individual transport in the future.

In the same way, EVs displace the combustion engine, a higher level of awareness attained by leveraged human capabilities through the reconnection of brain and body can take over from our limited, linear, first-order-thinking-based strategies to run the world. There’s no time to discuss and ponder, we have to act. In The Mindful Revolution I propose a peaceful, scientifically-proven, and low-cost way to enter the next level in the evolution of mankind. Looking forward to your feedback!

Mankind seems to have reached a crossroads. At environmental, political, and economic levels more and more urgent hazard warnings appear. Man has to cope with this high-speed change, and there are many well-intended activities already underway. However, what we need to survive exceeds fast-track rescue plans and well-meant community engagement. We have to bethink ourselves of our inherent abilities and leverage our entire skillset — after the Cognitive Revolution there comes the Mindful Revolution.

Media outlets switch from the term climate change to climate crisis because environmental developments have to be addressed urgently if we want to keep our planet habitable. Politically, we notice a strengthening of parties at the far-right and far-left spectrums and increasingly irrational behavior of leading politicians who seem not to be aware of their responsibilities as heads of governments. Due to environmental, but also economic reasons, there is a mass migration underway that brings millions of people from the southern hemisphere to Europe and other rich areas. — a migration caused by poverty, wars, and other conflicts with the refugees’ single hope for living peaceful, secure lives. This inflow of immigrants also results in huge challenges for governments and people living in rich countries having to somehow share many aspects of their rich lifestyles with millions of new arrivals, most of them not used to western conventions and democratic mores.

At the moment, convincing strategies to meet these challenges are missing. Now and then, some politicians, scientific task forces, or entrepreneurs come up with bold plans, such as installing bases on other planets in order to relocate humankind when planet earth has stopped functioning. Then there is AI, a technological development that awakes the same amount of enthusiasm and belief in the future as skepticism and fear of an uncontrollable behemoth that will subjugate human beings based on its superior intelligence. And there are thousands of mostly grassroots-driven, well-intended activities, many of them somewhat extreme or solitarily designed and therefore rather impractical.

Language And Storytelling

In his fascinating book Sapiens, Israeli historian Yuval Harari describes language and storytelling as the most differentiating abilities of homo sapiens compared to other mammals. For him, modern man has successfully survived and displaced other hominins because of this Cognitive Revolution. The language was the tool to suppress speechless contemporaries and to easily pass knowledge horizontally within huge populations as well as vertically from generation to generation. Unfortunately, wars of religion, autocratic jurisdictions and the more modern phenomenon of fake news have uncovered the flip side of language and storytelling: simple stories make people around the globe kill each other, allow governments and religious leaders to dictate terms for correct clothing and enable democratically elected presidents to trick and deceive as only con artists do.

Beginnings Of A New Era

At the end of the 19th century, there were first indications of a new era in understanding human capabilities. When, in 1890, Harvard psychologist William James published The Principles of Psychology, he was praised in America and Europe both by academics and lay readers. Some declared it a classic and likened it to Moby Dick. James transformed both, psychology and philosophy by popularizing his thesis of pragmatism, a way of thinking that argues human beings must test their beliefs and decisions by results. James invented the phrase “stream of consciousness” to describe the workings of our minds. For him, our thinking is not orderly or logical, but chaotic, and our moods constantly and inexplicably shifting. Without the knowledge of modern neuroscience, the synapses that connect billions of neurons, and neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and oxytocin, he wasn’t able to peer into the brain. Still, he was (one of) the first to state that human beings should be aware of the combination of their mental and physical abilities that by far exceed their physical abilities, alone.

In the past, development in most parts of the world has been regarded as a primarily technical development — first in terms of hardware and, with the advent of the computer, increasingly in terms of software. Any conference, task force, or scientific study that addresses “the future” mainly covers technological developments. I think, this is — an absolutely necessary — but entirely insufficient strategy to ensure the survival of homo sapiens on planet earth. It is my belief that humans living in the 21st century must meet a very individual challenge first, in order to commonly survive as a population: we must start the Mindful Revolution.

After The Cognitive Revolution Comes The Mindful Revolution

For me, the Mindful Revolution is the logical next step built on top of Harari’s Cognitive Revolution. A common feature of both revolutions is that neither one solves any major problem per se — but each one provides human beings with a toolset that can be used to leverage the abilities of individuals and populations to the next level of life. As with language and storytelling, mindfulness isn’t something that has been invented quite recently, but something that has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Whereas some scientists believe that Neanderthals living 300,000 years ago, could speak, Gutenberg invented the first printer quite sometime later, around 1440. That machine allowed stories to be distributed efficiently for the first time. The first signs of mindfulness appeared with the advent of Buddhism, in the 5th century BCE. In today’s Tibet, China and India many scholars teach behaviors and attitudes such as compassion, self-compassion, altruism, and others. In Western sciences of recent date, these teachings have been regarded as esoteric or folklore, measured against modern scientific frameworks. This chasm has started closing due to the fact that more and more knowledge about and results of mindfulness practice has been confirmed with scientifically collected and computed data gauged by high-tech medical gear.

High Demands On Ourselves

At the beginning of the 21st century, we know for sure that human beings know little about themselves, that we only use a tiny fraction of one of our mots important endogenous resources — our brains. In other words: we run the show — i.e. ruin our planet and kill our fellow human beings — without knowing ourselves in-depth, utilizing just a fraction of our capabilities. This must not be our expectations. As a humanist, my expectation must be to learn to know myself, to feel self-compassion, and thereby compassion for others. As an enlightened academic, I must utilize my endogenous resources in the best possible way — and I must not accept to capitalize on only 10% of my skill set.

What is the Mindful Revolution?

In short, Mindful Revolution means that human beings know themselves (gnothi seauton), feel self-compassion and compassion for others. The Mindful Revolution enables mankind to capitalize on the maximum of each individual’s physical and mental abilities. The Mindful Revolution enables human beings to develop a new, much broader perspective on life in general and on themselves and fellow human beings specifically. The Mindful Revolution allows for more tolerance, compassion, and understanding, enables people to develop ways and tools for cooperation and collaboration, and in the best case, a new way of jointly saving ourselves and our planet.

Mindfulness is a change that starts within and stays within the individual. By changing oneself, a person becomes more aware of herself, her sensations and capabilities, and, in the next step, more open for her environment including her fellow human beings. Without creating strategies, developing tactics, and planning details, the mindful person opens herself up for any external input. She experiences more sensations on a deeper level and is able to act and behave intuitively in a seemingly effortless way. There are more good things that happen to her, people treat her in a friendlier way, finding solutions to problems becomes easy. The reason for a better flow in life is not any kind of magic of randomness — it is a better utilization of the individual‘s resources, especially her brain. I am not speaking of anecdotal evidence — these effects have been measured and quantified in many scientific studies.

Whether it’s about schoolchildren with experiences in mindfulness practice, inhabitants of retirement homes, athletes, or the average working person, mindfulness results in a quantifiable improvement, ent of a person‘s lifestyle. In recent years, more and more individuals have learned about these positive effects of training without side effects. If this knowledge could be spread further and faster, more people, groups, and, finally, populations could benefit. We should teach our children, and we should integrate mindfulness into school curriculums. Mindfulness should become a mandatory subject in any kind of educational institution. In 2013, Ohio congressman Tim Ryan took this challenge seriously and started Mindful Nation, a non-profit foundation and education outlet teaching mindfulness to everyday Americans.

Mindfulness beats AI

Mindful human beings don‘t have to fear any kind of malicious AI. Whereas AI can easily take over computable tasks from human beings and outperform us in calculations, it should take ages before an AI would be able to emulate our mind. The human cortex alone has 30bn neurons and is capable of making 1 million billion synaptic connections, i.e. at least 10 followed by a million zeros. Knowing that the universe consists of 10 followed by 79 zeros particles, it becomes clear why mindfulness beats Artificial Intelligence, easily.

Beside all meaningful activities, and living a peaceful and eco-conscious life — we have the ability to and must start the Mindful Revolution — now!
