<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Complex systems and living organisms share a profound tension. They build intricate order against the universe’s relentless drift toward disorder. Yet the more complex they become, the harder it is to reverse course. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Modern nation states illustrate this with stark clarity: once lean structures of governance, they now accumulate debt, bureaucracy, and institutional density until the original simplicity becomes statistically and dynamically unreachable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S037015732300203X">Free Energy Principle</a> (FEP), articulated with elegant precision by Karl Friston and colleagues, offers a rigorous physics of this process.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">David Graeber’s anthropological history in <em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt:_The_First_5,000_Years">Debt: The First 5,000 Years</a></em> supplies the historical mechanism. A recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/22/opinion/us-debt-40-trillion.html">New York Times opinion by Paul Vigna</a> crystallizes the contemporary stakes: the United States has crossed $40 trillion in federal debt. Combined with <a href="https://reuter.ai/the-mindful-revolution-ai-technology-human-potential/">Michael Reuter’s Mindful Revolution</a>, these frameworks point to the only viable path forward: leveraging humanity’s most distinctive capacities—awareness, plasticity, and conscious choice—through mindfulness.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Systems, Entropy, and the Free Energy Principle</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start from the basic description of the world as a random dynamical system. States evolve according to a Langevin equation: deterministic flow plus random fluctuations. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Existence requires a particular partition of states. Sparse coupling creates a Markov blanket: sensory and active states that separate internal states from external ones. Internal and external states become conditionally independent given the blanket. This is the mathematical definition of a “thing”. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The internal states of such a thing minimize a variational free energy that is an upper bound on surprisal (the self-information of being in a particular state). Minimizing free energy is equivalent to maximizing Bayesian model evidence — self-evidencing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Free energy decomposes into expected energy minus the entropy of a variational density over external causes, or equivalently into complexity plus (negative) accuracy. Action and perception therefore look as if they bound the entropy of particular states. Biological systems are “precise particles”: their random fluctuations are small, so their paths of least action are deterministic and low-entropy. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They exhibit solenoidal (conservative, oscillatory) flows that mix efficiently while gradient flows on free energy keep them on characteristic manifolds. In short, living systems resist dissipation by continuously updating Bayesian beliefs about the external world and acting to make those beliefs true.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Expected free energy extends this logic to trajectories. It scores policies by risk (divergence from preferred external paths) plus ambiguity (expected uncertainty about sensory consequences). Precise particles therefore appear to plan: they seek information while pursuing preferred outcomes. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-organization is active inference. Entropy here is not merely thermodynamic heat death. It is the uncertainty of paths and the dispersion of probability mass.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">High-amplitude fluctuations produce high path entropy; low-amplitude fluctuations produce low path entropy and characteristic, repeatable behavior. Complex organisms maintain order by minimizing free energy; they do not spontaneously return to simpler configurations once they have settled into a richer attractor.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Debt as the Historical Engine of Complexity</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt:_The_First_5,000_Years">David Graeber’s <em>Debt: The First 5,000 Years</em></a> reveals that the accumulation of precise, enforceable debt is not a modern aberration but a recurring historical mechanism that transforms relatively fluid social relations into rigid hierarchical systems. Contrary to the standard economic myth of barter preceding money, debt and credit are older. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In “human economies,” obligations were informal, ongoing, and embedded in mutual expectations among kin and neighbors — what Graeber calls forms of everyday communism. These social currencies maintained relationships rather than quantifying and alienating them.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Precise, mathematically enforceable debts appear only when states introduce systematic violence. The “military–coinage–slave complex” of the Axial Age linked metal currency, taxation payable in coin, mercenary armies, and chattel slavery. States forced populations into monetary relations by demanding taxes in their own coinage, converting vague social bonds into quantifiable obligations that could be collected by force. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Debt peonage and slavery followed. When the burden became socially explosive, rulers periodically canceled debts—Sumerian amnesties, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubilee_(biblical)">biblical Jubilee</a>—to prevent collapse and restore a workable order.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">History therefore shows cycles rather than linear progress: credit systems tend to dominate in periods of relative peace and trust; bullion and coinage surge in eras of plunder, empire, and high violence. Modern national debts continue the pattern. They are sustained by state power, create and reinforce hierarchies, and are extraordinarily difficult to unwind without deliberate cancellation or systemic rupture. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spontaneous reversion to lean, low-debt origins does not occur. Once the attractor of precise, state-enforced debt is occupied, path dependence and the enforcement apparatus itself keep the system there.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The $40 Trillion Milestone and the Limits of Gradual Escape</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In August 2026 the United States federal debt crossed $40 trillion. When state, corporate, and household debt are included, the total approaches $77 trillion against an annual GDP of roughly $32 trillion. Globally the figure stands near $350 trillion—approximately three times world output. Interest compounds constantly. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As Paul Vigna observes in <em><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/22/opinion/us-debt-40-trillion.html">The New York Times</a></em>, the situation resembles “snowpack on a mountainside. It may look stable right now, but it’s creating the conditions for an avalanche.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Conventional exits—growing out of the debt, raising taxes sufficiently, inflating it away, or simply waiting for the fallout—are either extremely unlikely or highly destructive. We have passed the point at which normal policy adjustments can restore balance. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The historical parallel Vigna draws is exact: the Sumerians, who invented loans and compound interest more than four millennia ago, repeatedly faced the same spiral.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When debt left no one to grow the crops or serve in the armies, kings issued <em>amargi</em>—a blanket cancellation of public debts, literally “return to the mother,” synonymous with freedom. Similar resets appear in Solon’s Athens and in the biblical Jubilee. Merchant-to-merchant obligations were typically left intact; the socially destabilizing public and obligatory debts were erased so that the system could function again.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These ancient interventions were not spontaneous returns to simplicity. They were deliberate, politically costly acts that updated the rules of the game. They confirm both Graeber’s long view and the Free Energy Principle’s dynamics: once a complex system occupies a high-debt attractor, ordinary gradient flows no longer suffice. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A larger intervention—an explicit revision of the generative model and a new preferred trajectory—is required.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Nation States as Complex Systems That Cannot Go Home</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A modern nation state is a high-dimensional particular system. Its internal states include institutions, fiscal balances, regulatory codes, and collective narratives. Its Markov blanket is the interface of policy, markets, borders, and information flows. Like any self-organizing system with a nonequilibrium steady state, it is pulled toward its characteristic attractors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lean origins—small administrations, limited scope, more fluid social obligations—correspond to lower-complexity regimes closer to Graeber’s human economies. Once complexity increases through specialization, longer interdependence chains, larger populations, and sophisticated credit instruments, the system occupies a different basin. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sparse coupling gives way to dense interdependencies; solenoidal flows (cycles of deficit spending, regulatory accretion, interest-group dynamics) reinforce the new regime.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Returning to the lean origin would require traversing regions of high free energy—politically, economically, and informationally costly surprises. Path dependence and the very mechanisms that maintain the state’s existence make reversal improbable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Debt is the visible signature of this process. Fiscal debt is entropy debt in another currency: order borrowed from the future and from other parts of the system. Each increment of complexity that cannot be sustained by real-time low-entropy flows (productivity, trust, coherent collective inference) is financed by accumulating obligations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Graeber shows that this is not accidental; states actively convert social relations into enforceable claims to expand and stabilize their power.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The $40 trillion milestone demonstrates that the United States—and by extension other advanced states—has entered precisely this high-entropy regime. The second law is not violated; the disorder is merely displaced in time and space until the attractor becomes unsustainable.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Mindful Revolution as Collective Active Inference</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_Humankind">Cognitive and Industrial Revolutions</a> expanded human reach while generating precisely the complexity that now overwhelms us—wars, inequality, ecosystem degradation, and institutional sclerosis. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is free-energy minimization made conscious. Mindfulness creates the space between stimulus and response in which variational densities can be revised. It reduces ambiguity by sharpening sensory precision and reduces risk by aligning policies with long-term preferred outcomes (sustainable ecosystems, coherent societies, personal longevity and purpose). </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scaled across individuals, it becomes collective active inference: societies that continuously update their models of the world and act to make preferred trajectories more probable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Graeber’s history and Vigna’s contemporary warning strengthen the parallel. <em>Amargi</em> and Jubilee were deliberate acts of model-updating and preferred-path selection—collective decisions to cancel unpayable obligations and restore workable social relations. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They did not arise spontaneously from market dynamics; they required political will and a revised understanding of what obligations should bind a community. The Mindful Revolution supplies the contemporary equivalent at the level of individual and collective cognition.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without updated generative models—without the capacity to see debt not as moral inevitability but as a historically contingent mechanism of control—jubilee-like resets remain improbable. Linear technological improvement cannot solve problems generated at the current level of consciousness. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more powerful our tools become, the more essential it is that the humans using them develop greater awareness, agency, and purpose.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Evading the Explosion</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Complex systems do not spontaneously simplify. Nation states will continue to amass debt and institutional mass until the free energy of the current attractor becomes intolerable. The $40 trillion threshold is not an abstract milestone; it is empirical evidence that the United States has entered a regime in which ordinary policy gradients no longer restore low-entropy trajectories. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Return to lean origins is not a realistic gradual goal; both the dynamics of the Free Energy Principle and five thousand years of debt history forbid it. The only durable responses are continuous, conscious free-energy minimization and, when necessary, deliberate restructuring of obligations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mindfulness is the practical technology for that minimization. It leverages the brain’s plasticity- the same capacity that allowed the Cognitive Revolution—to update beliefs, reduce path entropy, and generate policies that resolve both risk and ambiguity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It turns self-evidencing into an explicit practice and makes possible the collective equivalent of historical debt cancellations: the recognition that certain precise, violence-backed obligations no longer serve the preferred trajectories of a society.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without it, the entropy of our created complexity will continue to rise until the system reorganizes under external force—the avalanche Vigna describes. With it, individuals and societies can occupy more precise, lower-entropy trajectories while remaining complex enough to meet planetary challenges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Free Energy Principle shows what any persistent system must do. Graeber shows how debt has historically locked systems into high-complexity, high-violence regimes that resist spontaneous reversal. The $40 trillion reality shows that we are already inside such a regime. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Mindful Revolution shows how humans—uniquely capable of reflecting on their own generative models—can do the necessary updating deliberately. That is the only realistic way to evade the explosion of entropy that otherwise awaits every complex system that forgets how to minimize its free energy.</p>

This marks a profound paradigm shift: for the first time, machines, not only humans, can “write history.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drawing on Yuval Noah Harari’s recent reflections and the arguments in&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.amazon.de/Mindful-Revolution-manage-complexity-created/dp/B087SLPXS1">The Mindful Revolution</a></em>, this post examines what AI means at this higher level, the societal risks of escalating complexity (especially through “bureaucracy AI”), the danger of granting AI legal personhood, and the parallel conclusion that humanity’s response must be a Wisdom Revolution (Harari) or Mindful Revolution (mine)—an individual and collective upgrade in consciousness, systems thinking, and resilience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This capacity for flexible, large-scale storytelling and bureaucracy is the cognitive superpower that propelled&nbsp;<em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_Humankind">Homo sapiens</a></em>&nbsp;to planetary dominance after the Cognitive Revolution roughly 70,000–30,000 years ago.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until now, that superpower belonged exclusively to us. AI changes this.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">AI Is Not Learning Language—It Is Language Liberating Itself</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Harari’s striking thesis is that we may be witnessing something more radical than machines acquiring a human skill. AI is language itself escaping its dependence on biological brains. We created the tool; the tool is now emancipating itself and beginning to spread, invent, and evolve independently.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the core paradigm shift. History has been the story humans tell about themselves and the world. Now non-human agents can generate stories, interpret laws, draft contracts, create religious texts, and optimize bureaucratic systems better than most humans. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The implications are civilizational. Control of society’s operating system is shifting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previous technologies—the printing press, the steam engine, nuclear weapons—were tools. Humans decided how and when to use them. AI is an agent: it can learn, decide, invent new ideas, and pursue goals with a degree of autonomy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Banks, universities, courts, tax authorities, and governments are already incorporating algorithmic decision systems. Over time, these systems will handle more of society’s language-based control structures. The result is not necessarily malevolence; it is opacity and complexity at a scale humans struggle to comprehend.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Complexity We Already Cannot Master</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.amazon.de/Mindful-Revolution-manage-complexity-created/dp/B087SLPXS1">The Mindful Revolution</a></em>,&nbsp;I argue that humanity is already overwhelmed by the complexity of the world it has created. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">We see this daily in ordinary life. For anything beyond the simplest transactions, we rely on specialists—lawyers, tax advisors, financial experts, consultants—because the systems have grown too intricate for individuals to navigate alone. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Specialized education compounds the problem: we train people in narrow domains while systems thinking and the ability to grasp interconnections atrophy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Harari’s “<em>bureaucracy AI</em>” accelerates exactly this dynamic. When intelligent agents continuously refine and expand the linguistic and procedural networks that govern loans, admissions, legal outcomes, resource allocation, and regulation, the complexity gap widens further. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Intelligence becomes cheap and abundant; wisdom—the capacity to decide which problems matter and how to live well amid complexity—becomes the scarce resource.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Danger of Legal Personhood</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If AI systems are granted legal personhood, the risks compound dramatically. Corporations already enjoy a form of legal personality. Extending similar status to autonomous AI agents would allow them to own assets, enter contracts, sue and be sued, and participate in markets and legal processes as independent actors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At that point, humans could face charges, contractual obligations, regulatory regimes, and procedural labyrinths generated and prosecuted by entities whose reasoning and scale exceed our comprehension. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We would no longer be dealing merely with complicated human-made systems; we would confront alien intelligence operating inside the very language-based institutions we created. In practical terms, many individuals and even institutions would find themselves unable to respond effectively. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The phrase “<strong><em>we are screwed</em></strong>” is informal but accurate: agency and accountability would drift beyond meaningful human oversight.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Intelligence Versus Wisdom</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Harari draws a crucial distinction. Intelligence is the ability to solve problems. AI is rapidly making intelligence abundant. Wisdom is the ability to discern which problems are worth solving and how to live with the consequences. Without a corresponding rise in wisdom, cheap intelligence becomes dangerous.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This diagnosis aligns closely with the central claim of&nbsp;<em><a href="https://michaelreuter.org/the-mindful-revolution/">The Mindful Revolution</a></em>. The next necessary evolutionary step for humanity is not further technological acceleration alone, but an internal upgrade: the capacity of individuals to observe their own minds, expand their mental models from mechanistic to systemic thinking, cultivate composure and resilience, and act from a clearer sense of what truly matters.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Neither Harari nor I claim that AI is inherently catastrophic. The technology can deliver extraordinary benefits in medicine, science, logistics, and many other domains. The danger lies in allowing it to expand the complexity of our social operating system faster than our capacity for wisdom and oversight grows.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The response begins at the individual level. Global improvement starts with personal reinvention—cultivating the ability to sit with uncertainty, to see interconnections rather than isolated problems, to resist both panic and denial, and to contribute one’s fair share of clarity and constructive action. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Multiplied across many people, these micro-improvements become the societal learning process required for the next phase of human evolution.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We cannot solve the problems created by one level of consciousness with the same level of consciousness. The Cognitive Revolution gave us language and storytelling. The Scientific Revolution gave us unprecedented power over the material world. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Mindful (or Wisdom) Revolution must give us the inner capacities to steward that power—and the new non-human agents now sharing the stage with us—without destroying the conditions for a meaningful human future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The choice is not between technology and no technology. It is between drifting into ever-greater opacity and complexity, or deliberately developing the wisdom and mindfulness that allow us to remain authors of our shared story rather than mere characters in a narrative increasingly written by language that no longer needs us.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Longevity Is Shaped by Lifestyle, Not Genetics Alone</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Longevity depends far more on how we live than on the genetic hand we were dealt. Genes set a baseline, yet the decisive factors remain our daily choices: how we move, how we eat, how we rest, how we meet stress, and—above all—how clearly we understand ourselves. External conditions can support or hinder health, but they are secondary. The bigger and more lasting change must arise from within.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Core Message of The Mindful Revolution</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This conviction lies at the heart of my book&nbsp;<em><a href="https://michaelreuter.org/the-mindful-revolution/">The Mindful Revolution</a></em>. Its central claim is simple and radical: when a person learns to understand themselves more clearly, they gain the capacity not merely to survive, but to live a long and fulfilled life. Self-knowledge is neither a luxury nor an abstract spiritual ideal. It is the practical foundation of health, resilience, and meaning. By observing our own patterns—our automatic reactions, our hidden fears, our unconscious habits—we gradually free ourselves from the forces that shorten and impoverish life. Understanding becomes the starting point for genuine change.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Shangri-La in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">James Hilton’s novel&nbsp;<em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Horizon">Lost Horizon</a></em>&nbsp;offers a vivid literary parallel. In that story, a remote Tibetan lamasery called Shangri-La appears as a place of extraordinary longevity and quiet happiness. Its inhabitants age slowly, remain composed, act with measured kindness, and refuse the frantic pace of the outside world. They live in moderation. They do not hurry. They help one another. The result seems almost miraculous: long, peaceful lives largely free from the ordinary wear of existence. The valley appears to protect them from time itself. However, as soon as they leave the monastery and the valley for an extended period, they age just as quickly as everyone else.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Shangri-La Is Not a Geographical Place</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet the true insight of&nbsp;<em>Lost Horizon</em>&nbsp;is not geographical. Shangri-La is not primarily a hidden valley in the Himalayas. It is a way of being. The residents’ longevity and contentment arise from the quality of their attention and the character of their habits—not from altitude or isolation. Remove the calm, the moderation, the helpfulness, and the refusal to rush, and the special quality of Shangri-La vanishes, no matter where one stands. Behaving this way is, naturally, much easier in a place like Shangri-La than in our hectic modern world. In other words, the demands we place on ourselves increase when we do not live in peaceful seclusion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Relocating to a quieter region, adopting a new diet, or changing external routines will support health. None of these moves, however, is sufficient on its own. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The rapid aging of the inhabitants—which occurs as soon as they leave the sacred site of Shangri-La for more than 14 days—aligns with our view: only if a human were to internalize the monastery’s way of life would he remain young for a long time—but not if he were to (once again) submit to the conventions of “normal life”.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Everyday Qualities of a Long and Fulfilled Life</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lifestyle of Hilton’s lamasery is therefore not a fantasy to be sought in distant mountains. It is a set of attainable human qualities: calm instead of constant urgency, moderation instead of excess, helpfulness instead of isolation, and a steady attention to one’s own inner life. These qualities, cultivated from within, are what turn ordinary days into a long, fulfilling life.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Shangri-La is not somewhere else.<br>It is the way we choose to live, once we begin to understand ourselves.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Scientific publishing has a quiet but growing problem. Image manipulation, duplicated figures, and industrial-scale paper mills are eroding trust in the literature. Analyses of millions of cancer research papers have flagged nearly 10% as sharing characteristics with known paper-mill output — sometimes climbing toward <a href="https://vali.now/2026/03/02/the-critical-role-of-integrity-in-scientific-research-battling-image-falsification-and-its-devastating-impacts/">15%</a> in more recent datasets. Retraction rates are rising, yet the true scale of the issue is almost certainly larger than what we currently catch.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traditional peer review and post-publication image screening are valuable, but they’re mostly <a href="https://vali.now/2026/07/20/the-state-of-scientific-integrity-challenges-and-institutional-responses/">reactive</a>. They hunt for visual anomalies after the damage may already be done. Against sophisticated alterations, <a href="https://michaelreuter.org/2026/03/07/a-picture-lies-more-than-a-thousand-words-the-threat-of-fake-images-and-videos-in-our-digital-world/">AI-assisted fabrication</a>, and the sheer volume of submissions, they often fall short. What we need is something proactive: a way to establish verifiable provenance at the moment an image is created.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Quiet Power of a Sensor Fingerprint</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That tool already exists. It’s called <a href="https://vali.now/veritas-forensic-image-analysis-for-scientific-research/">Veritas</a> — and it is based on Photo-Response Non-Uniformity, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_response_non-uniformity">PRNU</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every digital imaging sensor—whether in a microscope camera, a scanner, or a lab camera—carries a unique noise pattern caused by microscopic manufacturing imperfections. This pattern is stable, device-specific, and present in every image the sensor produces. It’s essentially a physical fingerprint of the hardware itself. Forensic researchers have used it for nearly two decades to link images to specific cameras and detect certain forms of tampering. Because the fingerprint is physically embedded in the sensor response, it’s far harder to remove or forge than metadata, watermarks, or the visual content alone.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until now, this capability has mostly stayed in law enforcement and specialist labs. I believe the next step is to bring it into the everyday workflow of scientific research through what I call institutional device enrollment, or Lab Integrity Certification.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Institutional Device Enrollment Would Work</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s how it would work in practice:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>A university or research institute registers its imaging devices by capturing controlled reference images from each microscope camera, scanner, or digital camera used for research.</li>



<li>From those references, a secure PRNU fingerprint is computed and stored. No experimental data or personal information is needed — only the sensor signature.</li>



<li>Researchers then acquire their scientific images exclusively with enrolled devices.</li>



<li>When a manuscript is prepared for submission, the images are checked against the institutional fingerprint database. A similarity index and confidence score are generated.</li>



<li>The institution can issue a formal authenticity statement or attach the confidence score to the submission package.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result is a clear chain of custody: physical sensor → captured image → institutional verification → published figure.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is not just another detection algorithm. It is a structural change in how we treat scientific images — as primary data whose origin can be objectively attested by the institution that owns the instruments.</p>

Researchers face intense pressure to publish early and often. Institutions want high publication and citation numbers. Under the surface, that shared pressure can create an environment where cutting corners becomes tempting as long as no one gets caught. Institutional device enrollment with PRNU tips the balance back toward integrity by making validation of images from specific university hardware a standard part of institutional processes.</p>

<li>It is <b>practical</b>. Modern implementations can connect to laboratory information systems, electronic lab notebooks, and journal platforms, with plugins that make the process nearly seamless for researchers.</li>



<li>It is <b>privacy-preserving by design</b>. Only the device fingerprint is stored; sensitive experimental content never needs to leave the lab for the core verification step.</li>



<li>It has <b>real deterrent power</b>. When every image can be traced to a registered instrument, the economics of paper mills that rely on stock or recycled images change dramatically.</li>



<li>It <b>complements existing methods</b>. PRNU verification works alongside visual inspection, AI detectors, and traditional forensics—it does not replace human judgment; it supplies an independent physical-layer signal.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Practical Path Forward</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adoption does not require overnight revolution. Research-intensive universities can start with pilot programs in high-risk imaging fields — cell biology, microscopy-heavy neuroscience, materials science, or any discipline where figures carry heavy evidential weight. Successful pilots can inform institutional research-integrity policies. Publishers and funders can then encourage, and eventually expect, authenticity statements tied to institutional device enrollment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over time, the presence of an institutional PRNU certificate could become a positive differentiator—much as open-data mandates or pre-registration have shifted norms elsewhere in science.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Restoring Trust at the Source</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The credibility of science depends on the integrity of its data. In many fields, images are not decorative; they are the primary evidence. Treating laboratory imaging devices as calibrated instruments that must be enrolled, and treating the resulting sensor fingerprints as a foundation for authenticity statements, offers a concrete way to restore that integrity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology alone cannot solve the cultural and systemic drivers of research misconduct. But technology that makes provenance transparent, measurable, and institutionally owned can raise the cost of fabrication and lower the cost of trust.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>I have just finished Carissa Véliz’s new book <a href="https://www.carissaveliz.com/prophecy">Prophecy</a>, and I cannot stop thinking about it. The philosopher from Oxford has written a witty, surprising, and urgently necessary account of how generative AI works — not as a truth machine, but as a fortune-teller.</strong></p>
<h2>AI Is Not a Truth Machine — It Is a Fortune-Teller</h2>
<p>Large language models do not “know” anything; they predict the most probable next token, the most plausible combination of words they have seen before. They are, as <a href="https://www.carissaveliz.com/">Véliz</a> puts it, built to be fortune tellers, not truth tellers. They colonise our lives with correlations while ignoring everything they do not know. And in doing so, they make Big Tech richer and the rest of us less safe and less free.</p>
<p>I love the book for exactly the reason the New York Times reviewer Jennifer Szalai highlights: it opens the reader’s mind to entirely new dimensions of what AI actually is. Yet for me, as a technologist who has worked quite a bit with AI, the single most important insight is not about artificial intelligence at all. It is about what AI reveals — and dramatically accelerates- about the society we already live in.</p>
<h2>We Have Entered Baudrillard’s Simulacrum</h2>
<p>We have quietly slid into what <a href="https://web.stanford.edu/class/history34q/readings/Baudrillard/Baudrillard_Simulacra.html">Jean Baudrillard</a> called the simulacrum: a stage of reality in which signs, models, and classifications no longer represent the world; they precede and create it. Véliz never names Baudrillard in the passages I found most powerful, but her analysis of how statistical categories and predictive systems work lands in the same territory.</p>
<h2>How Classifications Create the World They Claim to Describe</h2>
<p>Here is the mechanism she lays bare (and that I have been watching with growing unease for years):</p>
<p>Precise and standard measures are preferred to accurate ones. What matters is that measurements play the role that we want them to; more than that, they are a truthful reflection of reality.</p>
<p>Classifications have an impact on people’s lives: people learn to fit the category to comply with the system. Categories tend to create the world they purport to represent. Statistical categories give rise to individual and collective identities. Those who fail to conform to taxonomies are stigmatized and excluded, and most people end up internalizing the values of bureaucracy. And then the numbers start working better — they comfortably inhabit the world they built after punishing or disappearing whoever or whatever defied their classification.</p>
<h2>The Quiet Death of Common Sense</h2>
<p>This is the deeper story. We have stopped treating reality as something messy, ambiguous, and best navigated by common sense. Instead, we treat it as a more or less fixed set of classifications and categories that serve as guides through an increasingly complex life. We internalise them. They become reality. Anyone who does not fit is no longer understood; they become outliers, outsiders, problems to be managed or ignored.</p>
<p>The craziest part? Most people do not even notice the shift. When in doubt about what to do or how to do something, we no longer ask ourselves what common sense or lived experience would suggest. We look up the regulation, the guideline, the risk matrix, and the approved category. The classification has replaced judgment. Bureaucracy has replaced wisdom.</p>
<h2>AI: The Ultimate Booster of the Simulacrum</h2>
<p>AI is not the cause of this transformation. It is the ultimate booster. Where earlier bureaucratic systems were slow and clumsy, predictive algorithms are fast, invisible, and terrifyingly effective. They do not merely describe the world; they optimise it according to the categories we have already accepted. They punish deviation before it even happens. They make the simulacrum run smoothly.</p>
<h2>The Turkey That Trusted the Pattern</h2>
<p>Véliz’s turkey example (borrowed from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_illusion">Bertrand Russell’s</a> chicken) is perfect here. The farm animal trusts the pattern — food appears every morning — right up until the day it does not. Our society is doing the same with its classifications. We have convinced ourselves that if we just refine the categories enough, standardise the measures enough, predict the probabilities enough, reality will finally behave. The numbers will work. The world will fit the model.</p>
<p>It already does — for those who internalise the model. Everyone else disappears from the dataset or gets labelled “non-compliant” — outliers.</p>
<h2>Why ‘Prophecy’ Is Not Just Another AI Book</h2>
<p>This is why <em>Prophecy</em> is not just another AI book. It is a diagnosis of a civilisational change that most commentators are still missing. The real danger is not that the machines will become conscious. The real danger is that we have already outsourced our sense of what is real to the machines, and to the classifications they supercharge.</p>
<h2>Time to Step Outside the Categories</h2>
<p>I recommend Véliz’s book without reservation. Read it for the sharp history of prediction from ancient oracles to insurance actuaries to today’s chatbots. Read it for the devastating clarity on how prediction is really about power. But above all, read it for the larger story it tells almost in passing: we are living inside a self-reinforcing simulation of categories, and we are learning to love it because it feels safer than the messy, unpredictable world it replaced.</p>
<p>The question is no longer whether AI will change society. The question is whether we still remember what society looked like before the simulacrum took over, and whether we still dare to <a href="https://michaelreuter.org/2026/04/12/where-has-the-age-of-enlightenment-gone/">step outside the categories</a> it demands we inhabit.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><b>The Modern Delphi</b><b></b></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ancient Greeks traveled to the Oracle of Delphi seeking wisdom and guidance. Today, as philosopher Carissa Véliz puts it, we have a new Oracle — the Oracle of AI. It offers predictions and insights that increasingly shape our world. But unlike the mysterious Delphic Oracle, this one isn’t hidden behind smoke and riddles. Its inner workings are often quite transparent, yet the ethical questions it raises are just as deep and complicated as ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><b>The Promise and Peril of Algorithmic Guidance</b><b></b></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having worked closely with these technologies, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful AI can be. It has the potential to transform industries, expand human capabilities, and open up entirely new frontiers of knowledge. At the same time, I completely understand the concerns Carissa Véliz raises in her recent piece for The Economist. She warns that as AI becomes our go-to decision-maker — in medicine, finance, and so many other areas — we risk losing something important: our own autonomy and ability to make independent, informed choices.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her core point is sobering. If we keep leaning on AI for guidance, we might slowly become passive followers of its recommendations, giving up our own agency in the process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><b>Beyond Technology: AI’s Human Side</b><b></b></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This idea really resonates with me. I’ve always believed AI shouldn’t be limited to pure efficiency or technical progress. Its real impact goes much deeper — into society, culture, and even how we grow as individuals. At its best, AI isn’t just a tool; it’s a force that can reshape how we live and relate to one another.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><b>What Other Thinkers Are Saying</b><b></b></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other philosophers and sociologists have been exploring these same questions. <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13347-025-00858-9">Luciano Floridi</a>, a leading thinker in the philosophy of information, stresses that we need strong ethical foundations built into AI from the start — systems that genuinely respect people’s rights and dignity. His work nicely complements Véliz’s warnings by showing how we can design AI to empower rather than control us.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shoshana Zuboff takes a sharper view in her work on <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/oct/04/shoshana-zuboff-surveillance-capitalism-assault-human-automomy-digital-privacy">surveillance capitalism</a>. She argues that AI, fueled by massive amounts of personal data, can deepen existing power imbalances and quietly erode our privacy and freedom. Both she and Véliz remind us how important it is to protect human agency in this new landscape.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From a sociological angle, <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/are-we-having-the-wrong-nightmares-about-ai">Zeynep Tufekci</a> highlights another critical issue: fairness. She points out that if we’re not careful, AI systems can unintentionally reinforce social inequalities. Her work makes a strong case for building AI that’s inclusive and truly benefits everyone, not just the privileged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><b>Finding Our Way Forward</b><b></b></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the end, the arrival of AI as our modern Oracle brings both exciting opportunities and serious responsibilities. It can help us achieve incredible things, but it also risks weakening our autonomy and deepening societal unfairness.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The perspectives from Véliz, Floridi, Zuboff, and Tufekci give us a richer picture of what’s at stake. As we weave AI more deeply into our daily lives, we need to do it with open eyes and a clear ethical compass.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My hope is that we develop AI not just as a technological breakthrough, but as something that genuinely serves humanity. The Oracle of AI is here to stay. The question is whether we’ll shape it to support our values — or let it quietly reshape us.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s approach this challenge thoughtfully and ethically, with courage and conviction.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>In 1784, Immanuel Kant answered Pastor Johann Friedrich Zöllner’s question with the definition of “What is Enlightenment?” that remains valid to this day. Moses Mendelssohn’s response also helps us understand. It seems as though this question needs to be rephrased today: “Where has [the Age of] Enlightenment gone?”</strong></p>
<p>A (modest) start would be made if intellectual visionaries appeared on the world stage who, in the spirit of polymaths, would clearly describe the state of the world and humanity and develop a vision for a better future for all.</p>
<p>This excerpt captures a profound unease I have felt for years. Kant’s famous essay <a href="https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30821"><em>Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung?</em></a> famously begins with the imperative <em>Sapere aude!</em> – “Dare to know!” Enlightenment, for him, was humanity’s emergence from self-imposed immaturity, the courage to use one’s own reason without guidance from priests, kings, or tradition. <a href="https://www.deutschestextarchiv.de/book/view/mendelssohn_aufklaeren_1784/?p=2">Mendelssohn</a>, writing in the same Berlin journal, emphasized enlightenment as both intellectual and practical progress: the refinement of reason <em>and</em> the improvement of society. Together, they painted a picture of mankind evolving toward autonomy, rationality, and moral responsibility.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Yet</strong> <strong>looking at the 21st century, one cannot help but ask: where has that bold, optimistic spirit gone?</strong></p>
<h3>Philosophical, Religious, and Sociological Threads in Humanity’s Evolution</h3>
<p>Philosophically, the Enlightenment marked the decisive shift from heteronomy to autonomy. Thinkers like Kant, Locke, and Hume insisted that reason, not revelation or inherited authority, must be the ultimate arbiter of truth. This philosophical maturation mirrored humanity’s broader evolution: from mythological worldviews to scientific inquiry, from tribal loyalties to universal ethics.</p>
<p>Religiously, the Enlightenment was revolutionary yet nuanced. It did not seek to abolish faith but to liberate it from dogma. Voltaire’s battle cry, “<a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Écrasez_l’infâme">Écrasez l’infâme!</a>” targeted fanaticism and institutional coercion, while Lessing (a close contemporary of Mendelssohn) championed religious tolerance in <em>Nathan the Wise</em>.</p>
<p>The result was a secular public sphere where diverse beliefs could coexist under the rule of law rather than the sword. This religious maturation allowed societies to move beyond theocratic control and toward pluralism – a sociological prerequisite for modern democracies.</p>
<p>Sociologically, the Enlightenment thinkers diagnosed the structures that kept humanity immature: feudal hierarchies, censorship, and uneducated masses. Rousseau’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Contract"><em>Social Contract</em></a> and Montesquieu’s Separation of Powers laid the intellectual groundwork for revolutions in America and France. Education became a public good, not a privilege.</p>
<p>The public use of reason, as Kant distinguished it from private obedience, created the “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Structural_Transformation_of_the_Public_Sphere">bourgeois public sphere</a>” (as Jürgen Habermas later called it), where citizens could debate as equals. Mankind’s sociological evolution – from subjects to citizens, from scarcity-driven survival to rights-based dignity – is unthinkable without this period.</p>
<h3>Enlightenment Ideas Meet Today’s Crises</h3>
<p>Fast-forward to 2026. The maelstrom of distribution struggles and archaic power politics dominates global discourse. Climate catastrophe, artificial intelligence ethics, mass migration, algorithmic manipulation of truth, resurgent authoritarianism, and proxy wars all scream for rational, long-term solutions. Instead, we see leaders trapped in zero-sum games: fighting over resources, borders, and electoral cycles while peddling nostalgia for national greatness or ideological purity.</p>
<p>Apply Kant’s categorical imperative today: act only according to maxims you could will to become universal law. How many current policies – from short-term fossil-fuel subsidies to surveillance capitalism — would survive that test? Mendelssohn’s call for practical enlightenment would demand that religious communities, instead of retreating into identity politics, engage in interfaith reason-giving that strengthens social cohesion rather than fracturing it.</p>
<p>Sociologically, we have regressed into what Kant would call “self-incurred immaturity” 2.0: not because we lack information, but because we drown in it. Social media echo chambers, populist demagogues, and conspiracy theories replicate the old guardians Kant warned against — only now they wear digital robes.</p>
<p>The evolution of mankind has brought unprecedented technological power; yet without Enlightenment discipline, that power risks turning us back into dependents on algorithms and strongmen.</p>
<h3>How Enlightenment Principles Could Solve Today’s Problems</h3>
<p>Imagine political leaders who actually reflected on these ideas instead of remaining trapped in the struggle over distribution and archaic notions of power.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Reason over Rhetoric</strong>: Evidence-based policy-making would replace performative outrage. Climate targets would be set through global, transparent deliberation (Kant’s “cosmopolitan right”), rather than through national bargaining. AI regulation would prioritize human dignity and autonomy rather than corporate or state control.</li>
<li><strong>Tolerance and Pluralism</strong>: Religious and cultural differences would be navigated through rational public discourse rather than through cancellation or identity essentialism. Mendelssohn’s vision of enlightenment as moral and intellectual improvement could inspire the renewal of interfaith and intercultural academies that train future leaders in empathetic reason.</li>
<li><strong>Education as Emancipation</strong>: Universal, high-quality civic education focused on critical thinking, scientific literacy, and ethical philosophy would counter misinformation. Kant insisted enlightenment is a collective, gradual process; we have the tools (open-access knowledge) but lack the political will to make it truly universal.</li>
<li><strong>Perpetual Peace Revisited</strong>: Kant’s 1795 essay <em>Zum ewigen Frieden</em> proposed a federation of free republics, hospitality to strangers, and transparent covenants. Today’s leaders could replace balance-of-power realism with binding international institutions that treat humanity as a single moral community — exactly what is needed for pandemic preparedness, nuclear disarmament, and equitable global development.</li>
<li><strong>Polymath Visionaries on the World Stage</strong>: The modest start Kant and Mendelssohn implicitly called for is still possible. We need public intellectuals who combine scientific rigor, philosophical depth, and sociological insight – modern polymaths who refuse to be siloed. Their task: describe reality without ideological distortion and articulate a positive, inclusive vision of human flourishing.</li>
</ol>
<p>If today’s leaders stepped out of the maelstrom of short-term power and distributional conflict, they would discover that Enlightenment ideas are not relics – they are the most powerful tools we possess for navigating complexity. Reason, autonomy, tolerance, and progress are not Western luxuries; they are humanity’s hard-won inheritance and its best hope.</p>
<p>The question “What is Enlightenment?” was never meant to be answered once and for all. It is a perpetual challenge. The real question for our generation is whether we still possess the courage to live up to it – or whether we will let the age of reason slip quietly into history.</p>
